Guadalajara is the capital city of the central state of Jalisco in Mexico. It’s also the second largest city in the country and is considered a colonial city, although much of its architecture dates from the period of independence. The city is famous as the birthplace of the renowned Mariachis, and it’s the perfect spot to find some of the finest traditional Mexican handmade crafts. The town of Tequila is only a short drive away, and is a must-see when you’re in Guadalajara, to sample and learn about the world-famous Mexican drink, Tequila. The historic town is a magical place, full of traditional architecture and art, with stylish shops and restaurants. One of the greatest artistic treasures in Guadalajara are the impressive frescos by José Clemente Orozco, which can be found in the Palacio de Gobierno, the Instituto de Cabañas, and inside the Cathedral. The Cathedral, one of Guadalajara’s main landmarks, is a striking mix of architectural styles, with its lower sections dating back as far as 1571. There’s a large open plaza in front of it, perfect for putting your feet up for a while. Guadalajara, often called the pearl of the west, is a large and fascinating city with a beautiful and interesting contrast between the historic and the modern. It’s the perfect destination for tourists looking to visit a lively and traditional Mexican city that has all the comforts and scale of a big city, without losing that authentic Mexican charm.
