Veliko Tarnovo Bulgaria

Veliko Tarnovo is one of Bulgaria’s most important tourist towns, known for its fortress and medieval buildings. It became the capital of the country during the Second Bulgarian Empire. The city is about 250 km from Sofia and lies among three hills: Tsarevets, Trapezitsa, and Momina Krepost. The most significant is Tsarevets, where the Royal Palace and the Patriarch’s Palace were built, protected by the medieval fortress. As the medieval capital of Bulgaria, Veliko Tarnovo was regarded as a holy city and a center of Christianity, which is why it has many Romanesque-style churches, such as the Church of St. Demetrius.
