3. Phang Nga (Province)
Stay
About the destination: Phang Nga, in southern Thailand, is a bit of a hidden gem that combines striking natural beauty, rich culture, and plenty of adventure. Famous for its dramatic limestone karsts rising out of the emerald-green waters of Phang Nga Bay, it’s an ideal spot for nature lovers and anyone in search of a peaceful escape. From the iconic James Bond Island to quiet mangrove forests best explored by kayak, Phang Nga delivers a truly memorable experience. The standout attraction is Phang Nga Bay itself, celebrated for its spectacular scenery and unusual rock formations. The best way to take it all in is on a boat trip around the bay’s many islands and tucked-away caves. Be sure to visit Koh Tapu—better known as James Bond Island after its appearance in “The Man with the Golden Gun”. Kayaking on the calm waters gives you a closer look at the towering limestone cliffs and lets you soak up the bay’s natural beauty at a slower pace. Phang Nga isn’t just about scenery; it’s also steeped in culture. The area is home to several traditional Thai communities, including Koh Panyee, a sea gypsy village built on stilts over the water. A visit here offers insight into a unique way of life, and you can tuck into fresh seafood while enjoying sweeping views of the bay. Nearby, Wat Suwan Kuha—often called the Cave Temple—features a large reclining Buddha set within an atmospheric cavern, offering a glimpse into Thailand’s spiritual side. For a dash of adventure, Phang Nga has plenty going on. The Similan Islands, just a short boat ride away, are a top-class diving destination with crystal-clear waters and colourful marine life. On land, hiking and rock climbing are popular in the region’s lush national parks, such as Khao Lak–Lam Ru National Park. Whether you’re diving beneath the surface, exploring caves, or unwinding on quiet beaches, Phang Nga serves up a wide range of experiences to suit all kinds of travellers.
