The Falkland Islands are an archipelago in the South Atlantic Ocean on the Patagonian Shelf. The main islands lie about 300 miles (480 km) east of the southern Patagonian coast of South America and about 752 miles (1,210 km) from the northern tip of the Antarctic Peninsula, at roughly 52°S latitude. The archipelago covers about 4,700 square miles (12,000 square km) and includes East Falkland, West Falkland, and 776 smaller islands. As a British Overseas Territory, the Falklands have internal self-government, while the United Kingdom is responsible for defense and foreign affairs. The capital and largest town is Stanley, on East Falkland.
The islands sit on the border between subantarctic oceanic and tundra climate zones, and both major islands have mountain ranges reaching around 2,300 feet (700 m). They support large bird populations, though many species no longer breed on the main islands because of predators introduced by humans. The main economic activities are fishing, tourism, and sheep farming, with a focus on exporting high-quality wool.

Arrival: 00:00
-
Departure: 00:00
Elephant Island is the most arctic of the South Shetland Islands, in Antarctica. The name of the Elephant Island can be attributed both to its elephant-head shape, and to the first explorers, who sought to observe the elephant seals on its shores. The island is almost completely covered in glaciers. It is a migratory site for penguins including chinstraps in addition to sea elephants. The lack of secure anchorage prevented any permanent human settlement, although the island is well situated for scientific and fishing activities.
